Neck & Back Pain

Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common complaint relieved by chiropractors every day.

Often times untreated neck pain results in neck stiffness, upper back pain and stiffness, pain or stiffness at the shoulders or between the shoulders, headaches, jaw pain, and arm, elbow, or hand pain/numbness/tingling/weakness.

Underlying causes of neck pain may be poor posture, disc bulge/herniation, strains, whiplash injuries, stress, and poor ergonomics at work or with sleeping.

Chiropractic care can address the underlying cause of neck pain and alleviate associated symptoms.

Rib Pain

One of the most common signs of rib dysfunction is pain upon breathing especially upon deep breathing.

Rib pain can occur in the front of the body near the breastbone, in the sides of the body, or in the back near the spine or between the shoulders.

It may occur in combination with mid-back pain and may be due to posture dysfunction and/or muscle imbalance.

Having a rib ‘out’ means that one of the ribs has moved back or moved forward in the joint and is stuck there.

Every time you inhale and exhale your rib cage should expand and compress.  If you have a rib out then that rib does not expand and compress as the other ribs do and it becomes irritated and can lead to muscle spasm and pain.

Many patients see instant results when a dysfunctional rib is adjusted.

Lower Back Pain

Chiropractic is great for those suffering lower back pain, lower back stiffness, arthritis, leg pain, buttock pain, reversed lumbar spine curvature, poor posture, disc bulge/herniation and other lower back discomforts.

The above are all conditions and/or symptoms that may be due to dysfunction in the lower back.

Chiropractors can manipulate the lower back to align the spine, improve joint motion in the spine, reduce muscle tension and pain, remove nerve irritation and impingement all resulting in a better feeling and functioning back.

Preventive exercises are important to incorporate in any back pain treatment.  Current research says that building strong core muscles surrounding the spine can reduce future back pain episodes.

Hip Pain Treatment

Pain or pressure felt in the lower back off to the right or left side or both is often times described by patients as hip pain.

Usually when they point to the pain they are pointing to a joint called the sacroiliac joint.  Pain here is likely a result of misalignment in the pelvis or of the sacroiliac joint.

The sacroiliac joint is a unique type of joint that offers a limited amount of movement, and as we age it begins to fuse.

Ligaments hold it together and its misalignment is more often seen in women, as they are more prone to ligament laxity.

Sacroiliac dysfunction can occur due to a muscle imbalance, injury, poor posture (crossing the legs…), or activity.

There are several chiropractic techniques that are useful in the treatment of this condition.

Posture Alignment

Simply improving the posture can prevent many complications like, neck pain, back pain, and headaches.

Having proper posture improves your appearance and allows healthy breathing to fully oxygenate your body.

The human head weighs about 8-12 pounds and the muscles in the back of your body must really work hard to keep the head attached it you are always hunched forward.

It is much less work for the muscles and prevents uneven joint wearing in the spine to simply balance the head and each vertebra one on top the other.

Chiropractic can help restore normal curvature to your spine and allow for a better posture.

Good posture has results in the long run, normal joint and vertebrae wearing (what happens when your car tires are our of alignment?), the ability of your spine to absorb shock, and reduces your chances of an overuse injury.

Scoliosis Treatment

This is a side-to-side abnormal curvature of the spine that most commonly occurs at birth or during childhood.

The spine has natural curves that absorb shock and allow normal joint motion, but a scoliotic spine is not able to have full normal motion and may result in pain or discomfort.

It is important to have your children evaluated for scoliosis as some degrees may require proactive care to prevent progression and to manage symptoms.

There is a possibility that if caught during the early teen years scoliosis can be corrected.

Chiropractic care uses adjustments, muscle work, physiotherapy, and exercises to reduce the symptoms of scoliosis and help to maintain normal joint function.

Auto Accident Injuries

With car accident patients the most important goal of treatment is to reduce pain, reduce muscle spasm, reduce inflammation, increase circulation and healing, allow you to sleep without pain, and to allow you to perform normal daily activities including work without pain.

In most cases massage therapy will be incorporated with chiropractic care to achieve the best results.

Common injuries due to car accidents are whiplash, sprains, strains, headaches, disc herniations, disc bulges, nerve pain, anxiousness, and difficulty sleeping, sitting, standing, and walking.

If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident seeing chiropractic treatment as soon as possible can help to speed up your recovery.

It is not uncommon for those involved in car accidents to not feel pain directly after the injury.  The body goes into a fight or flight state and endorphins are naturally released due to the trauma and stress.  Even if you do not feel pain, it is important to have a spinal check up if you are involved in a car accident.  Chances are the aches and pains will set in after a few days and you will be glad you were proactive in your treatment.

A valid auto insurance policy claim will cover all treatment expenses and there is no expected out of pocket cost to the patient.

Work Related Injuries

It doesn’t take a physically strenuous job to have an on the job injury.

One may suffer a neck injury due to reading a computer screen for too long, or working in an environment with poor ergonomics, possibly an overuse injury due to typing, repetitively using a hammer, or lifting heavy objects.

The best way to avoid injury is to save your body by practicing safe lifting techniques and good ergonomics and posture.  Your chiropractor can help you with this.  Also your chiropractor can help you strengthen the core muscles and remove muscle imbalance to prevent these injuries.

If you are injured at work chiropractors are accepted as treating physicians under Oregon Worker’s Compensation insurance and can provide effective treatment to get you back to work and our of pain.

There is no need for a medical doctors referral to receive chiropractic care initially and we work closely with other providers to help you recover quickly.

Muscle Spasm and Tension Treatment

What came first the chicken or the egg???  This is what we must decide when treating muscle tension or spasm conditions.

What came first the muscle tension or the spinal dysfunction?

In almost all cases muscle spasm will create joint dysfunction due to the constant tension and pulling muscle leading to misaligned and stiff vertebrae.

On the other hand misalignment and poor motion of the spine can cause muscle tension and spasm.

This is a condition that can be treated by adjustments to align the spine and manual therapy techniques to reduce muscle spasm and muscle tension and to stretch tight muscles.

Ultrasound and Interferential current treatments are also effective in offering muscle relief.

Headaches

Chiropractic provides great results for those experiencing tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches (headaches coming from a tight neck), and migraine headaches.  Misalignment of the vertebrae may cause muscle tension and together may irritate or impinge nerves that travel up the head resulting in headaches.

Chiropractic treatment is highly effective in relaxing the muscles, correcting joint dysfunction, and removing nerve irritation.  Typically with chiropractic treatment headaches will first reduce in frequency, severity, and duration, then become absent.

Dr. Teah will also evaluate for complicating factors and other causes of headaches like poor posture, dehydration, nutrition, food allergies, stress, and other possibilities.

Prenatal Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a safe and essential part of pregnancy

Dr. Teah helps expecting moms have a more comfortable pregnancy through chiropractic care.  Having a balanced pelvis is very important for the mother as well as the baby.  Misalignment in the pelvis can be due to dysfunctional joints, ligaments, or muscles.  It can occur because of injury, poor posture, or as a result of the normal body changes that occur with pregnancy.  Side effects from a misbalanced pelvis may include pain, nerve impingement or irritation, and a less than optimal space for the growing baby.

Dr. Teah is certified in the Webster Technique which uses chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue modalities to balance the pelvis and restore normal nervous system function.  This technique has been studied to be effective in pregnant women to reduce pain during pregnancy and reduce difficulties during delivery.

Dr. Webster (founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) sites in some literature that women who began care with breech presenting babies found that after restoring the normal balance of the pelvis and nervous system the babies frequently turned to a more optimal position.  These cases are currently being researched.
